Open-rain BBQ by the Volga River

You can never believe Yahoo! weather for its predicament on Volgo's weather..

Having said that, it is possible to enjoy BBQ in the middle of Volgograd rare heavy rain. Plus the fact that few minutes before we did play "Water Balloon war", so when we walk in the middle of the city with wet clothes, we dont look like "a bunch of wet idiots on hot summer day".

Thanks to juniors that organize this. You guys deserve a place in Hell Kitchen for that scrumptuous food. Thanks for Afham who in spite of having to rush back, did manage to make a space. And thanks for the memorable Futsal game

I am peeing in my pants whenever I thought about this (not literally)

A junior of mine made this very unchallenged statement :
" bukan dah berpuluh2 exam ke ko lepas...takkan cuak lagi kot..SPM, PMR, etc etc"

Seriously.

Which actually do have some truth in it.
A lot of people (here mostly) had been kinda "priviknut" / adapted to Russian Exam System, where it provide little or no justice in accordance to level or hardship they put the students through.

I am actually more afraid of what happen AFTERWARDS the exam.

When I had my exam during 3rd year, I know if I screw it up, there's always the 4th year exam to fix myself.

But this, (and hear this my dear junior), is kinda last chance that u can screw up. Because afterwards, if u really did screw up, u gonna leave your Alma-Mater with "Screwed up" printed on your forehead to be seen.

And while those labels are indistinguishable in Malaysia where I will soon start my HO years, it does not put me in a comfort. Because then, our forehead is a new-clean-slate to be printed with new labels from our future MO.

I wonder what label they will put on mine?

p/s : will start Int Medicine tomorrow, feeling less enthusiased to open up Russian textbook due to recent revealing...

UK Escapade - Edinburgh

Edinburgh was our last destination in our UK Escapade series of crazy winter travelling.

Fair enough,after 10 days of hectic schedule and keeping up with lots of touring, we kind of had it off for a little while. But that's before we set up our foot on the great hilland of Scottish Edinburgh.

I had always been fascinated bout the Scots. Please note unlike many others, I DID NOT know the Scots from Braveheart. Still, I kinda indulge in their laid-back life and kilt. So, while others mostlu invest in the Tartan scarf, I goes to that end where I bought up a full kilt. I know, its crazy.

Edinburgh castle is perhaps one of the best medieval castle I had ever seen on top of a hill. Prague had one, so does Barca. But they lost those vivid sense of medieval battle, where pride and honor is the key to every knight ever worked in that stronghold. Enough said, it amazed me.

And the whole city of Edinburgh is sooo beautiful, zack had difficulties in accepting the fact that it is not re-build from a historical sketch.

I even set foot on the great Rosslyn Chapel, only that its under major restoration, so equal major disappointment here.

Our hostel is kinda cute, and very helpful, and I made a friend with the nicest Australian called Maddie Randell. Check her out in my fb list. We shared a lot in common (besides hostel room), and we had the same indulgement with castles, royalties, bla bla...only that she beat me to it when she announced she had a bloodline of a Scottish ancient family.

I, on the other hand, had my blood filled with glucose from the famous Scottish Shortbread (can be bought here in major supermarket in Volgograd)

p/s : I vowed that if I cant get married there atop the Edinburgh Castle (which is possible!! they do make reservation for weddings!! only that its gonna cost a sky!!), I will at least have a honeymoon here with my loved one...

UK Escapade - Northern Ireland

Tips : Rather than spending a huge amount of Euros (Up to 80E/person) for a pre-planned trip to Giants Causeway, there's always a cheaper alternative. However, ensure that you have this 3 : 1) Rent a car (pref automatic) from AVIS 2) GPS 3)Someone who can ACTUALLY drive

Yes, the driver is certainly not me (or even Zack, he thought he better off leave the license over there in Msia so his siblings could gawk at it), but Harith, my loyal companionship throughout the journey, whom need to divide his attention in between the snowy roads, makcik GPS, and me chatting my mouth off all the way.

But those hours of driving was certainly worth it!!!

Giant Causeway is phenomenal. Made up by volcanic and tectonic activity (I called it "rocks thingeys"), it had created this great hexagonal rocks arrange neatly from the hill downsliding into the Irish sea. Obviously, our ancient Grandfather love to pinch a salt, and instead of telling their kins the boring geologic activities, they create up a story where an Irish Giant built it as a bridge to cross the sea to fight with the Scottish Giant. And later on at the end of the story, they ripped it off. So a part of that causeway is here (in Northern Ireland), and really, a part of it is in Scotland. Its great because during old ye times, u can create up stories and nobody will ever Wiki-it.

Its an UNESCO world heritage site (the city of Malacca and Penang are world heritages sites too, but they are afar away from this to even create a comparison). I hate them Irish cause they have it all - those light heart behaviour, funny-yet-wonderful slangs, carefree life, good-look, alcoholic liver disease, and great nature. Owh, but I wont miss those cruel winter winds.

UK Escapade - DUBLIN

Not that Dublin is part of UK though, but its in my plan, so to heck with it.

I've been planning this up to meet with my best-mate Harith (pics above), who helped me through in school, and - God blessed him - had create a path for me to enter the medical school by letting me to copy a huge amount of his Add Math homework (I'm a real dumb donkey when it come to math)

But, as how he put it, we did bring our "Russian curse" to Dublin. Just on the day we arrived, Dublin experienced its heaviest snow-fall, so heavy that my mate said it never happened during his entire life in Dublin. And the sky cleared up just as we took our next flight to Edinburgh. Cliche, I know.

Snow and wind apart, Dublin amazed me with its light-hearted environment (or so I thought). Architecture is amazing (wish I studied in one of those Trinity College buildings), and the natural beauty is...just..natural. We visited Glendalough, who is an hour drive away from Dublin, and while Harith intended us to see the land and its greenery, we were greeted with broad plain of snow (where I learnt that Im an accurate snow-ball thrower when it goes to throwing at "the" balls,sorry I know its hurt)

And we made some friends in Dublin too. Well, mostly I met a friend-of-friend, but those Dubliners are so warm-hearted it enough to warm us up in those freezing night eventhough they have to cut back on gases. (recession, mate)

So, thanks a bunch to those who unknowingly invited us to Hadi's birthday party, to Shawal/his more glamorous social name in which I shall not published here for keeping us company till our end day in Dublin (and thanks for advicing me against buying those overpriced fugly sling-bag), and a BIG BIG BIG thanks to harith and his housemate for letting us to crash in (literally, crash)

UK Escapade - London again!!

After Manchester and NCL, we head back to London for the "piece du resistance" of our trip. The Arsenal - West Ham derby game.

Except its tie at the end. So its kinda disappointing with Zack's grim face, and me on the other hand couldnt wait for the game to finish as Im freezing my ass off (literally!)

Hate to admit but I found my new idols at the end of the game, who is Samir Nasri. I did foolishly bought the new away jersey and printed his name at the back, foolishly since I thought the jersey doesnt look good on me (or any other jersey for that matter)

but everything is ok soon after I went with Yah and Khalid to watch "WICKED" - the most amazing musical of the year!! (not to mention, my 1st ever musical that I attend - I used to attend some in Volgo, but I couldnt make the head and end of it when they sing in Russian). I officially fall in love with London's arts and theatre settings, that on my last day in London, I decided to skip the bed and went to watch Billy Elliot - another musical in less than a week apart. Its kinda pricey for student like us, but hey, I wont mind escaping some meals just to watch the Green Wicked Withc tossing her hair!!!

Then there's the typical London landmark. Big Ben, Tower bridge, bla bla...bo..ring...haha..at least its kinda boring when u have to struggle agaisnt cold winter breeze slapping right on your face. I couldnt imagine that I skipped all London's magnificent museum. Blame that to Zack since Im afraid it gonna bore him I dont even mind to ask.

UK Escapade - Manchester

Zack and I couldnt take the bus anymore (Megabus can be stinky), so we ditched our bus ride and ended up buying a new train ticket. We rather waste that 4 pounds than having to sit next to a in-couch WC. And anyway, Yah told us there will be sheeps..lots of sheeps along the railtrack..so yeah, minus WC and pluses sheeps, Im all for the train journey.

Manchester is...really...manchester. Not London, no romanticisim, classicism, neo-bla bla architecture. Its red bricks, functional, and within the shadow of the great manchester university, where Zacks friends are currently studying, and whom lovingly spared us their lovely home for us to ditch in. (did I really put all that facts in a sentence?)

In fact, we're not even planning for Manchester. So really, its just to spend good time with ol' friends (well, at least zack's, got no one I really know there), visiting the Old (literally) Trafford (Atak ngan Theenesh jgn mara please..hehe), and shops in Trafford Centre (hurraaaahh!!) which I found awfully beautiful to be just a shopping centre. I'd get married in place like that (statement NID utk ari ni).

They got the "box" in Manchester!! The X-box!! (not xxx u kinky little fella!!). I'm hardly a gamer, but I cant say I'm not impressed.

Talking about impression, there's a friend of Sdar/Jenglot/Naboo whom I met, and he made a big impression on me. I love the last night we were there, where we got everything out from his wardrobe and he insisted of trying his new cardigan with all the shirts he have. I'm sorry he had to return that cardigan, I found it lovely.

Will head back to London soon, for the Derby game..

UK escapade - day 3 (Newcastle)

The couch was too comfy that I woke up at 0830..tu pun seb baik khalid kejut,kalox, subuh unta la jawabnya..

After bagels and some guitar hero sessions (which emphasize that I sucks at music) we leave the house at 1000 to discover the beauty and the bold in Newcastle.

Let's start with the eerily silent St James Park stadium, the home of Newcastle FC. Not a football fan I am, but I managed to burn some cash purchasing the overrated souvenirs.

Then we head on to the city centre, watching the ruins, of the old city wall, some unrecognisable neo-classic church, the town hall, the theathre, and the chinatown.

Come the shopping time, and I can resist myself from the temptation of discounts in FCUK n Clarks. With the "develish" support from Khalid and Zack (thanx heaps guys) I ended up burning my pocket.

We later on walk along the hill towards Quayside, and testify the magnificent Millenium Bridge, one of the greatest architecture been built in.....Newcastle. it sparked contrast with the more ancient building beside it, but the modernistic Opera Hall by the left hill along the Tyne is a strong statement that Newcastle is really going forward.

Dinner was at some Indian restaurant, which left me with an episode of diarrhea. Tu la gatai sgt nk mango lassi.

Tomorrow we'll be leaving for manchester by train. I wish we wouldn't miss it or anything

7 a.m. and I could not stay in bed any longer. its been a while since I really had a good night sleep, and the single bed room in Hollands Inn is no match to the one I lay on every day in Volgograd.

after taking some morning walk around the block and breathe in the misty English morning, I had the longest warm shower, and light breakfast before we head to Victoria station, to store our luggage there.

The famous london tube dont sprang up without maintenance, thats for sure. but the very habit of 'em Londoners to maintain it on weekend really take a toll on us. Several lines are closed, n we do have to ride the double-decker buss. its hardly inconvenience, while at the same time i savoured the london scenery during her weekend...people from all over the world are here, but i cant see harrassment, or even rudeness in its day-to-day life. i dream of Volgo being like this...

Later on we head to Westfield, the unchallenged-yet,largest-shopping-centre in whole Europe. sales everywhere, but selections are few, and size that fits me...even fewer. At the end of the day, Zack managed to grab for himself a Topman jeans, some shirts n stuffs, while all that i can got for myself is a pair of socks.

Its 1630 and we're boarding the Megabus for 6 hour trip to London. notes to self : having a WC on board isnt a blessing as it smells! poor us that we have to wait for 4 hours before the bus clears up and we manage to shift to the front seat.

arriving in NCL later at midnight, we waited for Khalid and Yah to arrive for about an hour later. the NCL night is cold and eerie, but the few beggars who asked us for money politely do manage to cheer me up.

Yah's house is B.I.G!! in every sense that a russian student can imagine. imagine that her room alone is the size of my apartment in Volgo.

uk escapade - day 1 (london)

after almost 24 hours of wreck train ride, and another 4 of non-dramatic (thankfully) Transaereo flight to Heathrow, we arrived at last late in the evening.a friend (a girlfriend of a friend to be exact) met us there,and soon we criss-crossed the city to find our hidden Holland Inn hotel. there's nothing Holland about it,except it is located in Holland road.later that night , the london lad and lovely girls brought us to Tinkerdalle (is it?) a hip halal-food serving diner. its sooo hip we have to stand in line for a table. the steak was scrumptuous, and the companies were amazing!! i really hope to meet Ema more later on :) she got this really cool style that ppl would just love her..put on top of that, they managed to kick up a surprise birthday wish for me, which involving the whole restaurant announcing my birthday and sang for me, with a trophy and a desert ice cream with a candle, and not to forget the scores of hollywood stars wishing me well for years ahead.i know its a template, but nonetheless, im flattered..London have its air of friendliness, amid the cold gleamy weather. but counter that with the warm company we received whole night, and nothing would ever beat that..

but anyway..its my space..so I'm going to rant anyway...

(actually I was down with flu since 1st jan, but I guess a statement with "full-of-yourself" attitude wont hurt :)

as if there's a lot of people reading this crap anyway..

2008 had been.....to compose it into one word : AWESOME

I first started this blog on January 2008, as its kinda resolution for me to make up a new blog / to totally change the template and look...to give it a fresh feeling if you know what i mean..

Now reading back all the post, I can really say that 2008 had been a good year.

There's a black spot here and there...but we're human and powerless in the face of fate. So what happened, just happened I guess.

Now..of 2009...

2009 had not started very well though, with me fell in sick, and missed my countdown shouting due to a very severe sore throat.

And it was very cold on the NY eve, so less people were celebrating outside, and I missed the big fireworks I've seen 3 years ago. Maybe its the economic recession too, so the mayor decide to spend more on the alcoholic beverage rather than fireworks???

The economic fall will soon hit Malaysia. I guess most Malaysian dont really feel the pinch now, as usually it will hit us 6 month later. That would be terrible, because that would be approximately the time I start working. Perhaps our salaries will be cut down to half then???? But I cant complaint. I guess anyhow, we are in much better position than those really struggling to put their head above the water.

Which bring me to the issue of Violence in Gaza. It started coinciding with both Maal Hijrah (the new year of Islamic Calendar) and the Georgerian New year as well. It saddened me to see it happenings, but Gaza was, and is always a complex issue. Had Hamas and Fatah could put their differences aside, this latest violence might be avoidable. But who knows? I am no expert in international politics, thus I pray for the safety and for the violence to end soon.

Now on the bright notes, 2009 is...

1. The year when I will at last finish my med-school...YEAAAHAAAA!!!

2. The year which I will start to work and have my own 1st salary (aiseh, kene blanje adik sbb dah janji dulu). Will be the year when my life compose of 3 cycle (work-eat-sleep)

3. The year where I am gonna leave Volgograd for good (mix feeling) and thus, no more Euro trip :(( ...isk...isk...Im gonna miss travelling

And resolutions for this year are:-

1. Get out of med-school
2. Go exercise
3. Recite more
4. Read more
5. Think more
6. Play more
7. Live more
8. Less time in front of laptop
9. Love more
10. Remind to self that no (9) is a total crap when its not happening.

This is practically what my body screamed to my brain when I saw the confirmed diagnosis and the X-ray slide of my lumbar area..

Anamnesis :
This semester rounds, I felt it's like a blessing that I got a lot of invitation to involve more deeply into practical medicine..

While most of medstudents face the same problems about being shunned away while doing thei practicals - I am blessed with a very dedicated attending, readily to teached us humble students, and a group of perky colleagues to keep me coming for more and more practicals.

5 sessions of practicals later, I learnt a lot more than I had than spending this past 3 years reading text book of surgery. There's the chance to scrub in, and my attending "little secret" on how to insert the Nasogastic tube more easily. And..uh..the screaming, purulent anaerobic ass...cant never forget about that (yes, a real ass...not an ass like..a person)

Anyway, on my 4th session, I was attending a non-stop practical for 16 hours (its that even worth an on call during residency)..where I stand on my poor feet for most of the days..and return to home hours later..when the inevitle happened..

Complaints :
I was back at home, planning to cook some chicken soup (for the body and the soul). I must be too tired to even concentrate on what I am doing when I try to lift something from the floor...

and...SNAP!!!

it felt like I was being shot at the back. For a moment, I almost scream..but managed to clench my teeth and just lay still on the bathroom floor (oh...so...Izzie)...Its so hurtful, I passed my screaming phase towards the giggling phase ..and my housemate thought I was crazy laughing by myself in the bathroom

I cant sit, and I cant lay..so I happened to stand for almost an hour in the middle of the hallway. Then, with good-humor, housemate managed to lay me down with the help of an iron board to keep my back straight. And, that night...i slept on an iron board ..which i think is kinda cool..haha

only that, the next morning..both of my legs tingle..and to my upmost upset, I couldnt feel my own finger on my right foot...shit!! its neurological!!

a reference to 2 rheumatologist later, they suspected a case of Osteoarthritis and presribe me with a handful of meds

Instrumental Examination:

I felt they almost kidding since in whole of my humble knowledge, I rarely meet an Osteoarthritis (OA) among young, healthy (dare I say), people...its more commonly known as the old-people disease..u know..combined that with tear n wear and bla bla bla...its like they're telling me I have gray hairs...

So, as just to comfort myself I consider herniated disk (as the symptoms is quite similar) and refer myself to a surgeon.

The surgeon (who happened to be my attending) directed me for a "free" lumbar x-ray (ugh..the enema the night before..undescribeable) - and yes, its free because he snatched some unused films, and ask for favors from the roentgenologist.

Then, a neuropathologist come to assist with the diagnosis...

5 doctors and an x-ray film later..my diagnosis was confirmed....I am an aging man

Treatment :
I was given a paravertebral injection of analgesic - which miracolously quickly, surpressed my pain ..but not for long..

a handful of meds was prescribed..which all amounted up to Rub 2300 (RM 300) !! it may seems like a small change for some of you..but for a medstudent living his ass in Volgograd solely on the scholar...its too much...so i picked up the cheapest myorelaxant and NSAIDS, and pass out the analgesic..thinking maybe a day or two later, the pain will go by itself, or I will be adapted to it.

Prognosis:

All the meds above, sadly does not heal the condition. It only control the symptoms from vaguely affecting my life. The process is irreversible, and there's a good chance it may recurs from time to time.

For work and career, sadly I had to think seriously to stop with the elective surgery practical. And more upsetting, I might have to let go of my ambition from being a surgeon..for good...( I recalled the time when I was a kid and wish I could be a pilot, only to be told NO by the optometrist who prescribed me an eyeglass 1 year later)

Epicrisis :

This is a rare case of 23-year old young, Asian male, with a confirmed diagnosis of OA in L4-L5-S1, with neurologic complication. Patient led a sedentary (but happy) life most of his lifetime, and once in a while enjoy swimming just for the sake of it. A higher-than-normal BMI and increase workload with monotonous work regime is believed to be the triggering factors for the OA to develop. An osteophytes compressing the nerve is believed to be the cause of pain and numbness, and might all well cause chronic pain in right leg. Management is by strikingly expensive and time-consuming meds. Prognosis is poor as the process is reversible (though liveable) and patient might need to seriously consider being a psychiatrist (read : quack) for his specialities

Disclaimer : I know most of all u juniors out there snatch my award-winning case history plan. But this POST isnt one of them..so, please, dont cut and paste this and send it to your Traumatology lecturer..that would be awful for both u and me

These past few days , in some cosmic-related, twisted ways, I really connect to the elderly in my sweet little town of Volgograd

For example, there's a sweet little shop selling "sloika" (pastry shop, dare I say) with +-60 years old women as the seller, opened right in front of my house.

This network 0f sloika-selling babushka had become a phenomena in our little city. You can find them almost anywhere, at almost every major bus-stop.

This particular shop in front of my shop anyway, had a very particular scene to it...

Isolated from the major city centre, (as I could not afford to live there), the shop seems lonely, and stands out with it bright pink-color agaisnt the background of grim construction behind it.

And inside, the babushka (grandma) selling it, waiting faithfully, with a cup of tea, and some sort of novel in her hand.

I admit, I loved the sloika...and it almost become habitual of me to stop and buy it every time I reached the bus stop on my way home. But undeniably too, a little part of me just want to spend the 5 minutes of pure-business transaction, into something more personal. Yes, to spend some time to her, and let her know, in those lonely small shop, she can get a touch of human too.

It doesnt take long before our polite-form "Zdrastvuite" turn into more informal "Privet!" showing the fondness that grow. But, as commonly as it happened in my life, I dare not to ask her name (will tell u later on)..

Just 2 days ago, realizing how much money did I spend to the overprice pre-prepared pastry, she suggested to me to make my own. With that, she gave me a sample of the pastry dough, and enthusiastically teach me how to make it (though I must admit, i didnt understand half of what she said). But before I leave, she managed to say "vsyo ravno, pridet ko ne" (Eng : dont stop visiting me , even if u know how to make it urself)

Nonetheless, when I went home that evening, me and Yat managed to do our own, Malaysian-esque spicy pastry (apart from the sweet filling Russian very fond of here).

While biting into the pastry, I recall what she said. Little that it hidden the desperateness in her voice, missing human touch. Unlike in our homeland, elderly here tend to live on their own, without son or daughter visiting regularly, once they get married and move out of the house.

Today, I stepped out of the bus and merrily walked towards the shop. Someone else is inside there - yet another babushka...

Reluctantly, I paid for the overpriced pastry just to get an opportunity to ask where the usual woman who sat there. She said "she fell sick". I wonder if anybody even care to visit her at home..

So, today I left with a chocolate pastry in my right hand, and hope that the babushka will return tomorrow...

Else, it will take me another 2 weeks to say "privet" with this new babushka

Because love is what life is...

It was during my latest surgery practical when I witnessed this event.

The grandpa is fully paralyzed...and his loyal wife make every effort to contribute to her beloved husband comforts

The husband, while paralyzed from upper mid-trunk, downwards, could even utter a single comprehensible word (to us, at least). The wife seemingly fully understood what he's trying to say.

Of course, at his age, he wasnt admitted due to the paralysis. That diagnosis was put ages ago. Now, he developed a severe limb ischaemia with gangrenic foot, describing the insufficiency to be at 4th stage...and yes, obviously he'd need surgery..

But the wife wouldnt allow it. Albeit his disease, his wife understood that at his fragile age and health, the chance to survive is severely lowered. Yes, we have the best surgeon here in the city, but no one can guarantee that his husband will come back from the induced coma.

Surgeons are quick to discharge them (i suppose they pretty relieved that the wife would go forward with the surgery, because if she does - and she have every right to do so-it will prove to be a very difficult surgery)

But I can see tears in the wife's eyes. I - a student - could do nothing more than helping up the grandpa to his wheelchair and cart him out of the exam room, while we wait for the ambulance to take them home.

The wife cried, quietly muttering something incomprehensible...but its no complaints...not a single word of complaint..instead, she tried her best in her own way to keep his husband feel warm in the cold basement we are waiting.

Then, slowly, before the ambulance cart them away, the old man raise his one good-hand, and turning towards me, made a cross in his chest...I couldnt know what he tried to say. But in the end, I guess he just appreciate the time I spent with him, that I treat him as a human being, instead of a sick-old-man.

So, fellow colleagues...lets not rush ourselves to grow up too fast. Cause I swear when we turn to HO or MO, we'll be as cold as most doctors i see here...instead, the luxury of lending sympathy is still ours..at least till now...so, use it wisely.

The above story is not a story of falling...of lives in the dark end of winter turmoil..

instead, its a love story..

where they doesnt live happily ever after...

but they live, with love to each other..
